Origin Story
The story of the legendary Minotaur begins on the island of Crete, where Zeus was born. King Minos, the leader of the Minoans, prayed to Poseidon to send him a magnificent white bull to prove his right to rule his territory. Minos promised to sacrifice the bull when he prayed, but after it arrived, he kept it for himself instead.
As punishment, Poseidon caused Minos’ wife Queen Pasiphaë to fall in love with the bull. As a result, a creature with the body of a man and the head and tail of a bull was born. The Minotaur was named Asterion, or the starry one. As he grew, he became violent and unruly, eating only human flesh, so King Minos hired a master craftsman to design an inescapable maze dubbed the Labyrinth.
Every nine years, Minos forced his enemies in Athens to send seven young men and seven maidens to feed the beast in tribute. Fortunately or unfortunately, Asterion’s tragic story came to an end when Theseus, the king and founder of Athens, slayed the beast after Minos’ daughter Ariadne gave him a ball of string to help him navigate the impenetrable maze.

The story about the Minotaur of Crete is just one of many. Minotaurs continue to appear in classic and modern literature ‘til this day. Dante and his guide Virgil encounter the Minotaur as they navigate the Seventh Circle in The Inferno. He uses the Minotaur’s violent and brutal nature to describe how people descend into madness.
The Argentine writer and poet Jorge Luis Borges portrayed the Minotaur in a more sympathetic light as a character punished for his parents’ sins in his short story House of Asterion. Steven Sherrill portrays the Minotaur as a lonely linecook working in a trailer park in his novel The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break. Anaïs Nin writes about a young woman freeing her inner monster during a sultry trip to Mexico in Seduction of the Minotaur. These are just a few examples.

What Is a Centaur?
Characteristics: Half horse, half man. Also coming from Greek mythology, a centaur is part horse and part man, with a human head, torso and arms joined to a horse’s body and legs.
Origin Story
Legend has it that the first centaurs came to be after King Ixion was invited to dine on Mount Olympus. While there, he unintentionally fell for Zeus’ wife Hera. Sensing the problem, Zeus created a cloud-like nymph resembling Hera. Ixion fell for the trick and violated the nymph, which resulted in a deformed child named Centaurus who eventually mated with the wild mares and sired the entire centaur race. There’s actually an epic poem by Aratus called Phaenomena that describes the whole series of events.
Famous Centaurs
Although centaurs are often male, female centaurs also appear in art and literature, especially in later classic periods. The Roman poet Ovid, describes the beautiful female centaur Hylonome in his epic poem The Metamorphoses. Sadly, she committed suicide by throwing herself at the spear that killed her mate in battle.
The most famous centaur of all is named Chiron. Unlike most of his race, who were prone to debauchery and savagery (see Michelangelo’s Battle of the Centaurs, also based on Ovid, where the horse-man abscond with the bride at a wedding party), Chiron is a gentle, wise and civilized healer, who served as a mentor to legendary heroes like Achilles and Hercules. One day, Achilles accidentally struck Chiron with a poisoned arrow. Because he was immortal, he couldn’t die, but he also couldn’t heal.
Rather than live in pain forever, Chiron offered to trade his immortality to free Prometheus (the dude who was chained to a rock), which occurred after Hercules shot the giant eagle that tortured Prometheus daily. Touched by his selflessness, Zeus allowed Chiron to die and placed him in the night sky as a comet or minor planet. Often called the wounded healer, the comet Chiron governs very personal parts of your astrological chart between the inner and outer planets that represent areas of spiritual pain, insecurity or inadequacy.
Centaurs in Classic & Modern Literature
Centaurs aren’t just part of ancient Greek Mythology. They appear in modern classics like Harry Potter and the Chronicles of Narnia, where they’re portrayed as proud, noble guardians.
