What works for one person, may not work for you depending on your style, budget and preferences. I am partial to colored pencils, but you don’t have to stop there! Here are a few popular options.

- The Classic Choice: Prismacolor Premier pencils remain a top choice for coloring thanks to their wide array of rich, bold colors. However, I find that the buttery smooth lead can break easily and lead (ha ha!) to frequent resharpening.
- The Mixed-Media Marvel: If you want more versatility, Caran d’Ache Supracolor or Aquarelle watercolor pencils are my personal favorite. You can use them dry like a standard color pencil or run a damp paintbrush or cotton swab over your strokes to create beautiful gradients just like you would do with watercolor.
Markers, Pens and Crayons, Oh My!
- Alcohol-Based Markers: Some creators prefer alcohol markers for their vibrant colors and blendability that eliminates visible stroke lines, Ohuhu and Copic markers are top-tier. Be warned: they will bleed through standard paper, so they’re best for single-sided coloring sheets with a blotter or protective barrier placed underneath.
- Gel Pens: If you are working on highly intricate patterns like mandalas or Zentangles, a set of Sakura Gelly Roll pens provides clean lines and fun options like metallic, neon or glitter for a little extra bling.
- Adult Crayons: Yes, they exist! Brands like Caran d’Ache Neoart or Crayola Signature offer premium wax and oil pastels that give a nostalgic feel but with much richer pigmentation and smoother application than standard versions.
