li Astrology Journal: Prompts to Honor the Spring Equinox

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Happy New Year!

…sort of.

Okay, so maybe the new year is well underway according to the Gregorian calendar. But the beginning of the astrological new year comes with the arrival of spring. The Spring Equinox typically occurs on March 20th or 21st depending on the year. This year, we get an early start thanks to the leap year. On March 19th, the Spring Equinox transition happened as the sun slid into Aries. That’s right, Aries babes, you kick off the astrological new year for all of us! So grab that astrology journal and let’s get to work.

Maybe you already sense this fiery new start swirling around in the fresh air. Or you could be gently easing your way into this fresh start while processing endings and carefully choosing which way to go next. Personally, I always find the transition from the ethereal nature of Pisces season into the passionate Aries weeks a little jarring…but delicious, like a great shot of espresso! But any way you decide to start the astrological year is perfect, so long as it’s aligned with what feels good and true to you!

For every beginning, there is always a time to assess where you are before moving ahead. The fire of Aries season can feel both intimidating and beautifully all-consuming if we’re not able to stay grounded as we face the beginnings racing towards us. I mean, Aries is the God of war and courage for a reason, right? So, we’ve gathered a list of our favorite questions to ask ourselves during this Spring Equinox season.

Whether you’re tiptoeing ahead or firing on all cylinders, we hope these questions help bring in some much needed clarity and focus so that you can start this astrological new year off in the best way possible!

Photo Credit: Southern Living via site

For those off to a fiery start:

1. What first ignited the spark to move ahead?
2. Is that spark, that passion something I want to continue fueling?
3a. If it is, what are three active ways I can nurture that flame?
3b. If not, how can I redirect the fire into a more productive place? (I.e. switching the focus from unhealthy relationships to work, self-love, cultivating new friendships)
4. What are five characteristics I need to channel in order to be more aligned with the person I want to evolve into?
5. What is my ‘why’? Why do I want and long for the things I feel myself racing towards? Safety, security, love, feeling accomplished? What keeps me flowing so fiercely?
6. Four ways I can check in with myself the next few weeks and ensure I’m staying grounded and rooted in my purpose as I travel on through Aries season.

For those easing their way into the new:

1. What is my current energy towards this new season?
2. Where is that energy most felt within my body?
3. What thoughts arise as I tap and feel into these parts a little deeper? Fear, hesitation, resistance, melancholy?
4. Can I name the root of these thoughts/feelings?
5a. If so, what are they and what is one active way I can begin to undo each one? (I.e. Feeling a tight chest caused by fear and realizing doing the things I’m afraid of helps release those fears.)
5b. If not, that’s okay! Just skip ahead to the next part!
6. What are three things I’m ready to let go of?
7. How about four things I’m ready to fully let in?
8. What are five characteristics I need to channel in order to be more aligned with the person I want to evolve into?
9. What is my ‘why’? Why do I want and long for the things I feel myself walking towards? Safety, security, love, feeling accomplished? What keeps me flowing so fiercely?
10. Four ways I can check in with myself the next few weeks and ensure I’m staying grounded and rooted in my purpose as I travel on through Aries season.

Make It Happen: Manifest the Life of Your Dreams

by Jordanna Levin

isbn: 9781922351463,template: listEveryone can manifest. We’re all doing it-every second of every day-without even realising it.

For years, journalist and podcaster Jordanna Levin thought that she was psychic. She would worry about things and they would come true. But she wouldn’t just worry; she would feel them, take subconscious action towards them and believe with every cell of her being that they would happen … and most of the time, they did. A broken foot, a cancelled flight, a tragic love story… the list went on. She soon realised that she wasn’t just predicting the future, she was manifesting it. Until one day she changed the game. If she could manifest mishaps and disasters, why not the things she actually wanted?

The Power of Moments: Why Certain Experiences Have Extraordinary Impact

by Chip Heath – Dan Heath

isbn: 9781501147760,template: listWhile human lives are endlessly variable, our most memorable positive moments are dominated by four elements: elevation, insight, pride, and connection. If we embrace these elements, we can conjure more moments that matter.

This book delves into some fascinating mysteries of experience: Why we tend to remember the best or worst moment of an experience, as well as the last moment, and forget the rest. Why “we feel most comfortable when things are certain, but we feel most alive when they’re not.” And why our most cherished memories are clustered into a brief period during our youth.

Fuck Happiness: How Women Are Ditching the Cult of Positivity and Choosing Radical Joy

by Ariel Gore

isbn: 9781621069508,template: listHappiness is big business. Books, consultants, psychologists, organizations, and even governments tout happiness secrets that are backed by scientific findings. The problem is that all of this science is done by and for cis white men. And some of the most vocal of these happiness experts were announcing that women could become happier by espousing “traditional” values and eschewing feminism.

Skeptical of this hypothesis, Ariel Gore took a deep dive into the optimism industrial complex, reading the history, combing the research, attending the conferences, interviewing the thought leaders, and exploring her own and her friends’ personal experiences and desires. Fuck Happiness is a nuanced, thoughtful examination of what happiness means and to whom, how it’s played a role in defining modern gender roles and power structures, and how we can all have a more empowered relationship with the pursuit of joy in our lives.

Foods To Spark Creativity and Relaxation

Spark Creativity! Increase Relaxation!

Before we dive into this topic, let me just say that I am a Taurus. Food, creativity and relaxation are at the root of all I do in life.

That said, I firmly believe that good nutrition, inspired action and rest should be at the forefront of everyone’s lives. Caring for yourself through those three pillars is a surefire way to solidify your mind, body and soul are all well-nourished. If we’re not allowing ourselves to rest, move or nourish our vessels, how can we be connected to ourselves enough to create?

Anytime I find myself facing a creative block, there’s one question that first comes to mind.

Have I been eating well?

Honestly, as a woman with a busy schedule who loves indulging in delicious foods, the answer is often “no.”

Taking the time to put our own energy into creating life-giving meals for ourselves reinforces our love of self. Scientifically speaking, your nutrition and gut health have a direct correlation to your cognitive processes and capacity for joy. A happy body leads to a happy brain! So, diving into what you’re putting into your body is always a perfect place to begin problem solving blocks you may be facing.

Ahead, a few foods to begin adding into your daily diet to increase proper brain function and get those creative juices flowing!

Fruits, Green Veggies and Dark Chocolate

Each of these contain something called ‘flavonoids’ which have a ton of benefits. But most importantly, they increase blood flow. Proper circulation is vital for having access to all parts of the brain– including parts in charge of concentration, memory and processing emotions. So basically, all parts needed for that creative project you’ve been procrastinating! Greens in particular, such as broccoli and spinach are high in potassium and vitamin K, both improving brain health and reducing memory loss as we age.

Fish and Eggs

Oily fish, like salmon, mackerel, and tuna, are great suppliers of Omega-3 which helps increase oxygen flow to the brain, allowing us to retain more new information and recall known information. Eggs are rich in a mood regulating vitamin called choline. While both eggs and fish are high in B-12, an energy supplying vitamin that also encourages stable moods and brain functioning.

Seeds and Nuts

Jam packed with fiber, protein, and minerals, nuts and seeds provide the body with tons of long lasting benefits. The nutrients they provide all play a part in healthy cognitive function, stable energy and a good night’s rest!

We know it’s not always realistic to sneak in super healthy meals, every single day. But sending your body some nutrition-based lovin’ when you can will undoubtedly lead to a calmer and more free-flowing mind, nervous system and spirit. Your creativity is needed in this world! So we encourage you to get curious about the blocks you face every now and then. Investigate what is and isn’t working for you and your body. We promise easing some healthier options into your everyday life will only ever benefit you and your creative flow!

Joan Baez Biography

Joan Baez is a dynamic force of nature. Her commitment to music and social activism has earned global recognition, ranging from induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, to the Ambassador of Conscience Award, Amnesty International’s highest honor. Retired from active performing since 2019, she has devoted much of her time to the “Mischief Makers” series of paintings, portraits that immortalize risk-taking visionaries she has known, who have brought about social change through history, from Dr. Martin Luther King and Bob Dylan to the Dalai Lama and Patti Smith. Ms. Baez’s acclaimed book of drawings, Am I Pretty When I Fly? was also published by Godine.

When You See My Mother, Ask Her to Dance: Poems

by Joan Baez

isbn: 9781567928013,template: listJoan Baez shares poems for or about her contemporaries (such as Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, and Jimi Hendrix), reflections from her childhood, personal thoughts, and cherished memories of her family, including pieces about her younger sister, singer-songwriter Mimi Fariña. Speaking to the people, places, and moments that have had the greatest impact on her art, this collection is an inspiring personal diary in the form of poetry.

While Baez has been writing poetry for decades, she’s never shared it publicly. Poems about her life, her family, about her passions for nature and art, have piled up in notebooks and on scraps of paper. Now, for the first time ever, her life is shared revealing pivotal life experiences that shaped an icon, offering a never-before-seen look into the reminiscences and musings of a great artist.

Like a late-night chat with someone you love, this collection connects fans to the real heart of who Joan Baez is as a person, as a daughter and sister, and as an artist who has inspired millions.

Am I Pretty When I Fly?: An Album of Upside Down Drawings

by Joan Baez

isbn: 9781567927542,template: listLike a long, funny letter from an old friend, an album of drawings by the legendary singer and activist for social justice, Joan Baez.

Since retiring from active performing, Baez has focused her formidable talents on painting and drawing. This collection of drawings shows another side of Baez: lovingly loose and charming sketches on reoccurring themes such as politics, relationships, women, animals, and family. Each section, organized thematically, includes an introductory piece by the artist. Baez approaches her line drawings as exercises in freedom: she begins drawing upside down–often using her non-dominant hand–without any preconceived notion of where the lines might lead her.

Beginning with her seminal debut album in 1960, Baez has been a musical force of nature of incalculable influence whose earliest recordings fed a host of traditional ballads into the rock vernacular. In 1963, she introduced Bob Dylan to the world, beginning a tradition of mutual mentoring that continued across her many recordings. As a lifetime advocate for non-violent social change, she marched on the front line of the civil rights movement with Martin Luther King Jr., shined a spotlight on the Free Speech Movement, took to the fields with Cesar Chavez, organized resistance to the Vietnam War, and inspired Vaclav Havel in his fight for a Czech Republic.

And a Voice to Sing with: A Memoir

by Joan Baez

isbn: 9781439169643,template: listThe perfect time for a reissue: In October 2009, PBS will air a ninety-minute primetime special on Joan Baez as part of the Emmy Award-winning American Masters series. Told often from Baez’s perspective, but supported by a rich performance and historical archive, the documentary centers on her career as a musician, power as an artist, those who influenced her, and those she championed. She will also be on a 27-city U.S. tour starting July 2009..

– A musical force and a catalyst for social change: At the age of eighteen Baez was an international star with a Timemagazine cover story; fifty years later she has thirty-three albums to her credit. She also marched alongside Martin Luther King, Jr., was jailed for supporting the draft resistance, and sang in the first Amnesty International tour. An extraordinary woman who has led an eventful life, Baez’s memoir is as honest, unpretentious, and courageous as she is. .

Most Famous Symbolism Examples in Stories and Poetry

Most Famous Symbolism Examples in Stories and Poetry

Symbolism has been an integral part of literature since its inception, and writers have used it to convey a deeper meaning or to represent a theme.

Symbols allow writers to add depth and nuance to their work, and they are often what make a story or poem truly memorable.

Let’s explore some of the most famous symbolism examples in stories and poetry.

The White Whale in Moby Dick

The white whale in Herman Melville’s classic novel is a recurring symbol for both nature and God. Captain Ahab’s obsession with hunting the whale is also a symbol for man’s quest for knowledge and power, and his ultimately futile struggle against the unknown.

But the white color of the whale also represents purity, innocence, and a kind of divine providence that Ahab and his crew cannot comprehend.

And of course, white isn’t the only color with special symbolism in poetry – colors have long been used to convey certain images and emotions.

The Red Wheelbarrow in “The Red Wheelbarrow”

In William Carlos Williams’ poem, the red wheelbarrow is such a famous symbol that it’s even been parodied on The Simpsons.

The image of the wheelbarrow “glazed with rain / water / beside the white / chickens” is a symbol for the beauty and simplicity of everyday life.

Every object in the poem is deliberately chosen for its visual impact, and the arrangement of these objects creates a sense of harmony and balance that reflects the speaker’s appreciation for the things he sees.

The Green Light in The Great Gatsby

Scott Fitzgerald’s novel is full of symbols, but the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock is the most famous.

The light is a symbol for the American Dream, for Gatsby’s hopes and dreams, and for the unattainable nature of the past. The green color of the light represents both money and envy, as well as the promise of new beginnings and growth.

The Pills in The Matrix

It’s not just literature where you’ll find outstanding, long lasting examples of symbolism – they can also be found in film.

The red and blue pills in the sci-fi classic are a powerful symbol for the choice between reality and fantasy. Neo is offered the choice between taking the blue pill and living his life as he always has, or taking the red pill and discovering the truth about the Matrix.

The pills are also a metaphor for the ways in which we numb ourselves to the truth and the outside world in order to preserve our own sense of comfort.

Spring in Poetry

Spring is a symbol for rebirth, renewal, and new beginnings in countless poems.

In T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land, the arrival of spring is both a hopeful and a frightening symbol, as it brings with it the possibility of change but also the certainty of decay. In e.e. cummings’ “in Just-,” the arrival of spring is a joyful and innocent symbol, as children play and frolic amidst the fresh green growth.

From Classic to Contemporary, Symbolism is Everywhere

Literature, and every walk of life, is full of symbols that can capture our imagination – and tell us deeper truths about the world around us.

By using symbols, writers can convey complex themes and ideas that might be difficult to express in words alone. The examples we’ve discussed here are just the tip of the iceberg, and you will find symbolism absolutely everywhere.

Adding symbolism to your writing is a great way to give your work more depth and complexity and to engage readers on a deeper level. Whether you’re writing a novel, a poem, or a blog post, be sure to use symbols thoughtfully and intentionally to make your work truly unforgettable.

It Is Wood, It Is Stone

by Gabriella Burnham

isbn: 9781984855855,template: listWith sharp, gorgeous prose, It Is Wood, It Is Stone takes place over the course of a year in São Paulo, Brazil, in which two women’s lives intersect.

Linda, an anxious and restless American, has moved to São Paulo, with her husband, Dennis, who has accepted a yearlong professorship. As Dennis submerges himself in his work, Linda finds herself unmoored and adrift, feeling increasingly disassociated from her own body. Linda’s unwavering and skilled maid, Marta, has more claim to Linda’s home than Linda can fathom. Marta, who is struggling to make sense of complicated history and its racial tensions, is exasperated by Linda’s instability. Things We Never Got Over

by Lucy Score

isbn: 9781945631832,template: listNaomi Witt is on the run. Not just from her fiancé and a church full of well-wishers, but from her entire life. Although if you ask her, Naomi’s riding to the rescue of her estranged hot mess of a twin, Tina, to Knockemout, a rough-around-the-edges town where disputes are settled the old-fashioned way…with fists and beer. Usually in that order.

Too bad for Naomi, her evil twin hasn’t changed at all. After helping herself to Naomi’s car and cash, Tina leaves behind something unexpected: the niece Naomi didn’t know she had. Now she’s a guardian to an eleven-year-old-going-on-thirty with no car, no money, and no plan.

There’s a reason this bearded, bad-boy barber doesn’t get involved with high-maintenance women, especially not Type-A romantic ones. But since Naomi’s life imploded right in front of him, the least Knox can do is help her out of her jam. And just as soon as she stops getting into new trouble, he can leave her alone and get back to his quiet, solitary life.

At least, that’s the plan.

Probably Ruby

by Lisa Bird-Wilson

isbn: 9780593448694,template: listThis is the story of a woman in search of herself, in every sense. When we first meet Ruby, a Métis woman in her thirties, her life is spinning out of control. She’s angling to sleep with her counselor while also rekindling an old relationship she knows will only bring more heartache. But as we soon learn, Ruby’s story is far more complex than even she can imagine.

Given up for adoption as an infant, Ruby is raised by a white couple who understand little of her Indigenous heritage. This is the great mystery that hovers over Ruby’s life–who her people are and how to reconcile what is missing. As the novel spans time and multiple points of view, we meet the people connected to Ruby: her birth parents and grandparents; her adoptive parents; the men and women Ruby has been romantically involved with; a beloved uncle; and Ruby’s children. Taken together, these characters form a kaleidoscope of stories, giving Ruby’s life dignity and meaning.

Shakespeare’s Sonnets, Retold: Classic Love Poems with a Modern Twist

by William Shakespeare – James Anthony – Stephen Fry

isbn: 9781984823465,template: listJames Anthony has long enjoyed poetry with a strict adherence to beat, rhythm, and rhyming patterns, which he likens to the very best pop songs. This drew him to the rewarding 14-line structure of Shakespeare’s sonnets, yet he often found their abstract language frustratingly unintelligible. One day, out of curiosity, he rewrote Sonnet 18–Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day–line-by-line, in the strict five-beat iambic pentameter and rhyming patterns of the original, but in a contemporary language a modern reader could easily understand. The meaning and sentiment–difficult to spot, initially–came to life, revealing new intricacies in the workings of Shakespeare’s heart.

And so, James embarked on a full-time, year-long project to rewrite all 154 of the Bard’s eternal verses creating SHAKESPEARE’S SONNETS, RETOLD. This collection of masterful reinterpretations brilliantly demystifies and breathes new life into Shakespeare’s work, demonstrating the continued resonance of a playwright whose popularity remains over 400 years after his death. Now, the passion, heartbreak, deception, reconciliation, and mortality of Shakespeare’s originals can be understood by all, without the need to cross reference to an enjoyment-sapping study-guide. Coming with a foreword by Stephen Fry, this is a stunning collection of beautiful love poems made new.

Frankly, we all know that embracing self-love and honest self-expression shouldn’t be considered a radical act. Yet, in today’s society, we’re often forced into the “I’m okay” box rather than allowing vulnerability to lead us. For some populations, these truths are a much harsher reality than for others. Yasmine Jameelah created the Transparent & Black Collective for just this reason. Transparent & Black is a community designed to encourage members of the African diaspora to prioritize themselves and take up all the space they desire. With a digital community of over 80,000 members, this journalist actively reminds us that loving ourselves so radically frees all those who witness it. If you

And they honor parents, stepparents, and grandparents: the sacrifices made, the separate lives lived, the tendernesses extended to a hurting child; the abundance, in retrospect, of having two families.

Along the way, we glimpse loss. There are flashes of the pandemic, ghosts whose presence manifests in unexpected memories and the mysterious behavior of pets left behind. But The Hurting Kind is filled, above all, with connection and the delight of being in the world.
