Tattoos: Creative Expression for the Soul

4 minute read

Freckles, birthmarks, laugh lines.

Our skin is a map not only of where we’ve been, but also of what we’ve survived and who we are. So it makes sense that our ancestors of nearly every culture expressed themselves by adorning their skin with sacred markings.

Yes, odds are somewhere down the line, your ancestors were tatted.

Tribal markings and sacred rituals have always gone hand in hand. Maybe that’s because there’s more to tattoos creative expression than just making something look cool (though, let’s be honest, that’s reason enough to go for it). Tattoos can serve as a reminder—for a loved one, a battle we’ve overcome, or to keep our chin held high in the face of adversity. This energetic exchange between you and your artist binds you both together for a minute or a few hours of connection as you make a permanent change to the way you’re seen.

The pillars of tattooing are artistry, communication and storytelling. Words or none, tattoos are a language all their own. They speak volumes to the soul who chose them. While everybody has their own reason for getting a tattoo, the style you feel called to can say a lot about who you are. From the dainty lines of minimalist tattoos to the timeless rebellion associated with American Traditional work, here’s a peek at how we interpret the top four styles.

Fine Line/Minimalist Tattoos

Style: Delicate, dainty lines often create florals, words, or darling symbols.

If you love this style, then…

You’re probably a lot like me. An introspective storyteller who uses tattoos the same way you use a journal– to release and remember. Maybe you love clean aesthetics or the simple romances of life. One thing is for sure, your story is powerful and sharing it on your skin is a beautiful reminder of that.

Blackwork

Style: Entirely black ink and high-contrast work. Typically this bold and daring style forms sacred geometric or abstract patterns or mandalas.

If you love this style, then…

Your spirit is your compass. Whether it’s mysticism, meditation, or just loving the Fibonacci sequence, you love uncovering the mysteries of life. You’re no stranger to an ego death. How empowering it must be to share your light and dark with the world on the vessel that carried you through it all.

Watercolor

Style: Bright work mimicking brushstrokes and splashes of paint turn your body into a true canvas. Black sketches of the tattoo’s subject overlap to create your vision.

If you love this style, then…

You’re a visionary. Period. You weave the world you wish to see with passion. A sunset, a killer concert, or a perfect last line in a poem can reduce you to a puddle. And it should! Art is not only meant to be seen. It’s meant to be felt. Your tattoos do just that, artiste!

American Traditional

Style: Pin-up girls, daggers, tigers, roses. This style is equally about the subject and the thick black outlines. When you think “tattoos” this is the kind you see.

If you love this style, then…

Reds, greens, yellows and a few blues. The colors of American Traditional are strong, true and steady— much like you, you rebel. You likely appreciate the grit and timeless icons (and probably a motorcycle). From your grandfather’s stories to your fave thrifted denim jacket, you believe in all that stands the test of time. Just like your tattoos.
