Let’s find a way to harness your creativity – no matter your 9-5!

We’re often told that creative dreams aren’t realistic. Society leads us to believe that the “starving artist” trope is the our most likely fate. While that is technically possible, there are endless other, more successful ways for our artistic journeys to unfold. Maybe we shouldn’t say harness your creativity but let it loose!

Sometimes we surrender fully to our artistic endeavors. Other times we allow them to remain hobbies that fuel our freedom outside of our contained 9-5. Either way, it’s natural for the busyness of everyday life to start extinguishing our creative flames.

The good news is that spark will never truly die. If you’re an artist, you’re an artist for life. The way you view the world in such colorful ways will forever be a part of you. The question is, ‘Will that creative spark leave this world with you or will you allow its beauty to run freely?’

Whether you’re creating for fun or aiming to pursue your passions full-time soon, these tips and tricks are sure to help you feel fulfilled along your journey!

Carve Out Creation Time –

Can’t drop everything you’re doing and paint at the drop of a hat? I completely get it!

Scheduling time to flow through your art will help you stay in touch with your creativity and build self-trust through accountability. And we all know that trusting yourself is the most vital part of life as a creative!

Follow The Impulses –

When you are able to act on a creative impulse, do it! Time is of the essence when an idea creeps up on you. You never know where that first step in creation will lead you. So, every time you have the urge to practice your craft, dive into it!

“You never have to change anything you got up in the middle of the night to write.” – Saul Bellow

Embrace New Art –

Maybe you’re a potter who can’t whip out her clay at her desk job. But you can listen to a new genre of music while working and explore the feelings it stirs within you. Of course, we all have our preferences on the media we consume. But dipping your toes into a new way of creating and thinking every now and then will keep your artistic perspective alive!

“The artist’s world is limitless. It can be found anywhere, far from where he lives or a few feet away. It is always on his doorstep.” – Paul Strand

Lean Into Movement and Meditation –

We as creatives are first and foremost a vessel for the new. Caring for our body, mind and spirit is the best way to keep that connection to our imaginations and inspiration clear. No, I’m not saying you have to run every day or meditate like the Dalai Lama. But dedicating time to clearing your mind helps you remain present and open to the surprises your art will divinely lead you to!

“Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine, and at last, you create what you will.” – George Bernard Shaw

Speak Life Into Your Art –

Speak about your art! We so often hide as artists out of fear of rejection or

embarrassment. But if you don’t believe in yourself, who will? Telling others about your creative endeavors reinforces your belief in your skills and potential. Most importantly, giving yourself permission to be seen as an artist allows others to connect with you on a deeper level and inspires others to own their artistry as well. You never know who needs to hear what you have to say!

So between you and me? Do you still think you will have any issues harnessing your creativity now? There are no excuses. Export the art world, let loose your greatest ambitions and maybe that 9-5 won’t be your 9-5 for long!
