Small Town Romance Books with Big Hearts
What is the small town romance trope?
Books that include a small town romance trope feature a warm, community-centered story where love grows in a tight-knit, picturesque, or secluded place. It includes well-meaning but nosy neighbors, can’t-miss hometown gatherings, and a “found family” vibe.
Give the small-town romance novel a go
As someone who grew up in a small town, this particular trope makes me roll my eyes a bit. It was a tiny, beautiful place in Amish country, populated with the bluest collars imaginable, and I was surrounded by farmers and steelworkers. It was basically a jumping-off point for a variety of romance tropes.
Just so you know, haylofts have a lot of rats. Farm animals do not exactly smell like romance. Everyone in a small town knows exactly who is doing what with whom, and they will talk about it for years. And years. Like their grandkids will talk about it. Every single trope bullet point checked off the list, and I thought that meant that small towns were not the setting for me. Dear reader, I was wrong!
Prepping for this article inspired me to give the small-town romances another go, and I am so glad that I did! This great list of books will have even the most citified reader dreaming of Main Street.

How the Story Goes by Andrew Forrester
It’s bad enough to Whit Longacre that he has to contend with a grieving eight-year-old, devastated by her mother’s death. Helen also left a fun little surprise in her will. There is one book left before her ultra-famous, ultra-popular book series is completed. And she wants Whit to write it.
An author himself, Whit, normally writes well-paced literary mysteries. He has no idea how to START a book with such a high profile, let alone finish a series that millions of people around the world are talking about every single day. He absolutely must see this through, but Helen didn’t leave any notes, an outline, or anything giving him a clue as to what her vision had been.
Merritt Pryor owns the local bookstore in the small New England town. She’d left for a bit, but returned home after a series of unfortunate events, which included dropping out of her very prestigious MFA program along the way. She doesn’t write any more, but she still reads, and Merritt is also a mega fan of the Greenwood Castle series and is in fact one of the people who is waiting desperately for the final volume. Whit may have just found the perfect solution—for the book and for his future.
“Brimming with charm, heart, and humor! Reading How the Story Goes is like stepping into your favorite Nora Ephron film. It is a salve for the world-weary soul.” – Alex Kiester, 1 New York Times bestselling co-author of The Missing Half
“Set in a dreamily charming New England town, How the Story Goes is about smart, empathetic humans wondering how you carry on when your life story has gone awry. I loved losing myself in the novel’s world of bookstores and libraries, lingering over tea by roaring fires, rediscovering alongside Forrester’s rich characters the pleasure of creating art and the solace of love.” – Amanda Eyre Ward, New York Times bestselling author of The Jetsetters

Her new life is exciting, but there are some challenges, too. The ranch foreman doesn’t trust her. She is an outsider, and she is related to Bellamy Whitlock. That’s enough for Crew, who is also the heir apparent at Halcyon Ranch, to keep her at arm’s length.
Crew does begin to soften toward her. Grace is a talented trainer, and he has never in his life met someone with her level of determination. As she wins over everyone around her, he knows that it won’t be long until he falls head over boots for her.
There is unfinished business with her uncle however, and Grace knows that the deadline is looming. Will she be forced to leave the only place that’s ever felt like home? And will Crew still want her when he knows the unvarnished truth?
