Did you know that May is Mental Health Awareness Month? At little infinite, we’re celebrating by offering up a collection of journal prompts with an emphasis on positivity and self-care.

Established in 1949 by Mental Health America, this month-long observance was created to raise awareness about mental health conditions and the importance of cultivating emotional wellness. This year’s theme is More Good Days, Together. It encourages us to reflect on what a good day looks like, both for ourselves and for our communities. Together, we can be there for one another and connect with others who need help or can offer the support we need in the moment.

Our Mental Health Epidemic

While we’re putting the spotlight on mental well-being this month, it’s a priority that deserves our attention all year. Today, the most prevalent mental health concerns include depression, anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress. These are widespread challenges that deserve compassion, empathy and our collective care. Adolescents and young adults between the ages of 12 and 25 are affected disproportionately — with more than one in three dealing with depression, anxiety and serious mental health concerns. Fewer than 14% of older adults (those over 50) have the same struggles although loneliness and isolation are still major issues for this population. These statistics underscore the urgent need for accessible tools and daily practices that support emotional resilience.

As someone who has dealt with grief, trauma and difficult life situations (I lost my mom, my dog, my husband and my dad all within six months. True story. It was a bad year), I understand that small daily habits can make a big difference in not just how we feel but how we think. Without maintaining a positive mindset, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Journaling is just one tool at our disposal, along with exercise, friendship, meditation, support groups and professional assistance, when needed.

The Science Behind Journaling

Journaling is more than just putting pen to paper or writing until your hand cramps. Research from organizations like the American Psychological Association shows that expressive writing reduces stress and anxiety. It also helps individuals process emotions and organize their thoughts. By externalizing our internal dialogue, we lower our physiological stress and gain a sense of control over things and feelings that might otherwise seem overwhelming. Without further ado, here are 16 journal prompts for mental health and self-care.

16 Journal Prompts for Clarity and Mental Well-Being

  1. Defining Wellness: To me, prioritizing mental health means …
  2. Daily Checklist: List things that you can do to improve your mental health this month and every day.
  3. Courage in Motion: Describe one thing you did recently to overcome your anxiety or fears. How did it feel to move outside your comfort zone?
  4. The Gratitude List: List four things that you are grateful for today and explain why they are meaningful to you.
  5. Finding Strength: Anxiety and mental health concerns can be limiting. Describe one way that your personal struggles have made you stronger or helped you relate to others.
  6. The Reset Button: When I am overwhelmed, here are five things I can do to feel better in the moment.
  7. Joy Mapping: I am happiest when … (Describe the environment, the people and the feeling).
  8. The Support Letter: If your friend was dealing with similar challenges, write a letter expressing how you would show your support for them. (Optional: read it back to yourself).
  9. Moments of Power: Recall a time when you felt empowered. What did you do, and how did it change your perspective?
  10. The Clean Slate: If habits or limitations are holding you back, write a goodbye letter to the things that are no longer serving you.
  11. The Circle of Control: Describe three things outside your control and how you will practice letting them go. Then, describe three things within your control and how you might change them.
  12. Self-Care Ideas: Brainstorm five creative ways you can prioritize self-care today, no matter how small.
  13. Your Happy Place: Take several moments to visualize your happy place. Write a description of this place, or draw a picture of what’s in your mind’s eye.
  14. Pivot to Perspective: Describe one time when things didn’t go your way, but the outcome ended up being better than you originally expected.
  15. Daily Mantras: Create three daily affirmations to help you cope when things feel difficult.
  16. Reflection: Take a moment to reflect on how these prompts have helped change your perspective or focus on your unique strengths.

Tools for Your Journaling Journey

I’m partial to a Pilot pen, a cartridge-style fountain pen or something colorful like my 10-pack set from LePen. Sakura is another good choice. Below, I’ve included a guided journal and an illustrated guide on prioritizing self-care to help you get started.
