Protective Boyfriends in Romance Novels

What Does “Protective MMC” Really Mean?

Sometimes the fantasy isn’t being saved… it’s being prioritized.

I’m a modern woman—but I’ll freely admit there are moments when I want someone else to show up and handle everything. Someone whose first instinct is safety, whose focus narrows the second I’m threatened, and who makes it very clear that whatever’s wrong will be dealt with. Preferably while I remain in full passenger-princess mode.

Enter the protective MMC—one of BookTok’s most beloved romance tropes. MMC stands for male main character, and when BookTok calls him protective, they don’t mean mildly concerned. This is the hero who positions himself between danger and the heroine without thinking, who checks locks twice, watches rooms carefully, and takes “nothing will happen to you” as a personal vow.

The trope exists on a spectrum. On one end, you’ll find the wholesome guardian boyfriend—steady, emotionally present, and quietly reliable. On the other, the overprotective hero: intense, territorial, and sometimes toeing the line between control and care. BookTok loves both, especially when the story explores why he’s like that and how protection turns into trust, partnership, and devotion.

Here are some of our new favorite romance books that feature protective MMCs in all their forms:

Binding 13 – Chloe Walsh

You may have seen this one on TikTok, the first book in Irish author Chloe Walsh’s explosive The Boys of Tommen series. We cannot wait to dive into the second title, Keeping 13!

This sports-themed romance stars Johnny Kavanagh, a popular all-star rugby player who should be living a big life. But people don’t know that he is in near constant pain, due to an injury that may be a career ender.

Shannon has been bullied for her entire life. She would love to keep completely to herself, go unnoticed, and make it through school as quickly as possible. But she meets superstar Johnny on her very first day, and their meet-not-at-all-cute turns into an intense friendship, which develops into much more.

Being Johnny’s girlfriend will shine a social spotlight on Shannon, and she’s not sure she can handle that level of exposure. It may not be an issue if Johnny’s career is over, but it will be impossible to keep a low profile if his post-injury career continues to skyrocket.

Binding 13 is definitely on the tamer end of the romance spectrum. There are some intimate moments, but the sexy stuff not the driving force behind the story. The characters are still in high school, so this one is on the chaste side. Some reviewers place it firmly in the YA category, but there is a lot of debate!

“Okay, so let’s get into it! I really loved how Walsh not only gave the FMC and MMC their romance plot, but both Johnny and Shannon had really good personal arcs. I really loved how much we saw Johnny focus on rugby career and him struggling with his injury.” – The Reading Room, online review

Too Late – Colleen Hoover

Colleen Hoover has sold a ton of books. Some sources quote close to 30 million copies, other sources say 20 million, but either way, in 2022, she outsold both James Patterson and John Grisham. She has a deep backlist, and Too Late is definitely my favorite Hoover title to date!

Sloan is desperately trying to pay for her brother’s medical treatment, and she is out of ideas. With nowhere else to turn, she clings to the lifeline offered to her by Asa Jackson, a notorious

drug trafficker and all-around dirtbag. Compromising her morals is worth it to keep her brother alive.

When an undercover DEA agent named Carter enters the picture, Sloan is immediately drawn to him. But if Asa finds out, he will kill Carter immediately. And Asa always finds out.

This is definitely one of this author’s spicier titles, arguably THE spiciest. The sex scenes have been called “explicit” by some folks online. Even if you love Colleen Hoover, check the trigger warnings before you dive in, this one gets heavy.

Praise for Colleen Hoover:

“I recommend this book to everyone I come across!”―Her Campus

“Colleen Hoover’s romances and contemporary fiction novels . . . grip readers with emotionally charged storylines, unique plotlines, and twists that leave us reeling.” ―Business Insider

“Hoover always tells her stories so beautifully . . . [An] ideal holiday gift.”―Houstonia magazine

Powerless – Lauren Roberts

If you prefer your romance reads to have a YA vibe, you must love Sarah J. Maas. And if you love Sarah J. Maas, do not miss this, the first title in a trilogy filled with forbidden romance, heart-pounding action, and a brutal competition that definitely favors the elite.

In the kingdom of Ilya, everyone is categorized as an Elite or an Ordinary. Born an Ordinary, and stuck in the slums, Paedyn Gray has a lot of reason to commit crimes, particularly stealing. She poses as an Elite Psychic in order to blend in around the city and keep out of trouble.

But when Paedyn saves one of Ilya’s princes, she finds herself thrown into the Purging Trials, a series of tasks that were designed to keep the Elites on top. It should be a showcase of powers, but Paedyn doesn’t have powers. But guess who does! The prince that she saved is constantly on her mind, and the two grow closer. Will the prince ever find out that Paedyn is completely Ordinary?

“Lauren Roberts’s exciting story thrills with flirtatious banter, cutthroat battles, and searing betrayals…present[ing] a spin on the deadly game trope by incorporating multiple layers of complexity: dual POVs; fathers both admirable and problematic; hints of a love triangle between Pae and two brothers; sexually tense moments with ‘a promise of passion’; fierce training and fight sequences enhanced by creative abilities; and an underground Resistance hungry for revenge. Powerless is a compelling tale of darkness and destruction, of a divide carved by a vicious king, and of the lure of freedom, choice, and power.” — Shelf Awareness

Phantasma – Kaylie Smith

Welcome to Phantasma, a confusing maze filled with huge ballrooms and corridors that change direction. It’s home to demons…and temptations galore.

Ophelia knows that if you win all of the challenges that Phantasma puts in your path, you win an incredible prize: a single wish. Her sister has disappeared, and that wish is the only way to save her life.

There may be monsters lurking around every corner, but Ophelia’s real challenge is defeating the other opponents playing the game. When a charming, ridiculously attractive guide offers to help her win, she knows she shouldn’t trust him. Blackwell claims that he has all of the answers, and the information can be hers in return for ten years of her life.

There are two rules in Phantasma: stay alive and don’t fall in love. That may be Ophelia’s biggest challenge of all.

“Spellbinding, suspenseful, and spicy, PHANTASMA is a darkly romantic romp that will take your breath away. Smith has deftly woven the nine levels of hell into a tale that’s as swoon-worthy as it is bloody, and readers will love following Ophelia through a game of wit and nightmares. Combined with thoughtful neurodivergent rep and twists I didn’t see coming, this is a story that kept me reading long into the night!”―M. K. Lobb, author of the Seven Faceless Saints duology “Sinister, seductive, and delightfully dangerous. Straight off the streets of the Big Easy, readers will be craving more with every brilliantly crafted level in this game of secrets and forbidden desires. PHANTASMA is the perfect concoction of dark opulence, sizzling hot romance, and unforgiving gore.”―Alexis Menard, author of House of Bane and Blood

The Things We Water – Mariana Zapata

This author has an INCREDIBLY rabid fanbase, and there are a lot of strong feelings about this particular book. Readers were very polarized, and some of her followers felt like someone else had written the book entirely because it was so different from Zapata’s normal style. But how can you go wrong with an intro like this?

“Once upon a time, a girl found a magical puppy, and her life was never the same again.”

I was immediately captivated by the premise of a sprawling ranch where all kinds of magical creatures are trying to live their lives in peace. The owner of the ranch, Henri Blackrock, is Nina’s best friend’s cousin, so they do have a very loose connection when they meet, but as they spend time together, Nina comes to understand just how important the magical community is to Henri, and she begins to fall for his protective nature toward everyone on his ranch. She’s arrived with a magical puppy and a ton of problems. Will Henri’s loving protection extend to her – and

the dog?! – as well? This slow-burn story is more COZY than it is SEXY, putting it in the one-pepper category!

“I’m not a huge fantasy reader, but I’ll read anything and everything Mariana Zapata writes, so when she released The Things We Water, I jumped in right away. I adored this book! Nina and Henri were everything! This had all the Mariana Zapata charm and the best slow burn. The fantasy facet was easy to follow, and it took place in ‘our world’, which was so helpful.” – Christy, goodreads review

Lights Out – Navessa Allen

I’ve had the most interesting conversations about the first book in the Into Darkness trilogy! When I asked my spice-loving friends about their recent favorites, Lights Out was the overwhelming winner. And for some extra fun, most of them mentioned the audiobook as a can’t-miss. In fact, one of my girlfriends asked if there was a five-pepper category. There isn’t… but this would certainly qualify!

There are some trigger warnings here, the tropes include: stalking, morally gray characters, and kinks of all kinds. Move on if that isn’t for you!

Aly Cappellucci doesn’t need any more kinks. Nothing could possibly top the masked men she follows online. Unless one of those men was shirtless, heavily tattooed, and waiting for her in her bedroom. She dreams about being hunted by one in particular, of him chasing her down and doing deliciously dark things to her willing body. She never could have guessed that by sending one drunken text, those dreams would become her new reality.

Josh Hammond’s online persona lets him have experiences that he would never have in real life. But after reading an online comment from a woman begging him to break into her house has his wheels turning. The two live out their darkest fantasies, but when someone else enters the picture, Josh turns from sexual predator to protector of the woman with whom he has become obsessed. Fantasy and real life collide in this excellent read!

“Funny and filthy. Perfect for lovers of masked men, thirst traps, and knife play, this is the dark rom-com of BookTok’s dreams.” ―Ashley Bennett, author of Muscles and Monsters “Twisted, sexy, and fun, it’s the perfect read for those looking to dip their toes into the darker side of romance.” ―Luna Ramirez, author of Dead Girls Club

Axe-ing For Trouble – Daphne Elliot

No one is more surprised than Mila herself when her one-night stand with a sexy lumberjack turns into something more. The two find themselves hiding out in Jude’s cozy, remote cabin, forging a connection that makes heat bloom under Mila’s skin.

But Mila is on the run from something very dangerous. She’s close to finding the answers that she needs, but Jude’s protective instincts are making it difficult. If Mila’s trouble catches up with her, they will both be destroyed. Can Jude keep both of them safe?

The majority of the sexy scenes take place in the latter half of the book. It is a slow burn to get there (AFTER the initial ONS, of course) but it is 100% worth the wait! And don’t miss the rest of the titles in this fun series! Our favorite? Axe-Backwards, of course.

Lots of folks are talking about the audio version of this book, with dual narration by Gideon Frost and Victoria Connolly. Don’t miss it!

“Jude was the perfect hero. I loved how he was a sweet musician, lumberjack, who also wore glasses.” – Amber Reads Romance, goodreads review

“If you like your books to have a little mystery and suspense thrown in with a feel-good love story, this is for you! The first chapter had me on the edge of my seat and I was definitely not expecting that kind of beginning.” – deathbytbr, romance.io review

Gentle reminder, you may feel differently than I do about these books. Do your research before picking up any titles, the protection in these books does range from “normal” to “Edward Cullen”, so make sure your pick matches your mood!
