Alexander Hamilton… We have a romance about you!

Hamilton's Battalion
Reading Time: 2 minutes

Hamilton’s Battalion is a trilogy of novellas linked by Alexander Hamilton’s wife Elizabeth, interviewing people who fought alongside her husband in the Revolutionary War. Elizabeth’s faithful love for her late husband is in itself a fourth love story in this book.

While Hamilton’s Battalion is a work of fiction, it brings to the forefront the unheard and unheralded voices of people who fought for an America they knew might not welcome them into the fold after the war.

Promised Land by Rose Lerner unfolds from the perspective of Rachel, a Jewish woman, in the guise of a man to fight in Hamilton’s army. When her abandoned husband becomes a prisoner of war, she has to reassess her marriage, heritage, and the nagging question of who she will be when the war is over.

In Pursuit Of…by Courtney Milan is admittedly my favorite of the three, the story of Henry, a disgraced Brit, sent to fight in the war by his father in an attempt to straighten him up. The plan goes awry, and Henry will instead abandon his post to follow John, a Black soldier in the Colonial Army, whose first act upon meeting Henry is to try to kill him. Henry will return the favor by nearly killing John with his incessant chatter as they journey on foot five hundred miles to John’s home in Rhode Island.

That Could Be Enough by Alyssa Cole rounds out the trilogy, the story of Elizabeth Hamilton’s secretary, Mercy, who has given up on everything frivolous, love included until Andromeda Stiel shows up shattering her carefully cultivated life of order with a single glance.

Whether you’re a fan of Hamilton or simply historical romance, you’ll find something to love in each story in Hamilton’s Battalion.
