Written by a stellar line-up of Black female authors, Blackout was in part inspired by Dhonielle Clayton’s niece posing the question, “Why didn’t Black girls get big love stories?”
Blackout delivers not only big love stories for Black girls, but it is also a love story to New York City. Set during a single evening, Blackout chronicles six pairs of teenagers as they navigate a darkened city and their feelings for each other. The sense of disorientation precipitated by the blackout is a perfect backdrop to the unique confusion and anticipation that comes with young love. Although each writer’s voice is distinct, Blackout reads as a seamless novel.
If you’ve not yet had the opportunity to read the novels of Tiffany D. Jackson, Dhonielle Clayton, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, or Nicola Yoon, Blackout is a great way to dip your toes in. The fact that these authors are best known for children’s and YA fiction is incidental – they are the writers of a generation, giving voice to our time.
