Have you ever seen one of those children’s mix-and-match books of people or animals with the pages cut horizontally into thirds? The idea is that you can put a pig’s head on a man’s body or dress a queen in overalls and sneakers—the analog precursor to Bitmoji.
Angelika “Jelly” Frankenstein is the precocious spitfire sister of Victor Frankenstein. You know who he is, right – the fictional creator of the guy with the square head and bolts in his neck?
In Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match by Sally Thorne, Jelly follows in her brother’s footsteps and creates an ideal suitor from the body parts of corpses. One handsome head, three parts muscular torso, a smattering of well-proportioned solid legs, and voila! Dream man.
When her creation, Will, wakes up, he has no memory of his previous life, but he retains enough moral character to know that he might have a family or children to whom he owes his loyalty. Although Angelika is instantly smitten with Will, she joins him in his search, hopeful that if no one turns up, Will can be hers.
This is the first Sally Thorne novel I’ve read, but it won’t be my last; I will admit to wheezing with laughter as I read. I love nothing more than a sassy heroine; if you share the sassy love, this is your book.
