The Long Game by Elena Armas Review

A Heartwarming, Humorous Tale of Redemption and Love in Small-Town USA

BONUS! It’s available in 30 different languages.

“The Long Game” by Elena Armas is a heartwarming small-town love story about Adalyn Reyes, a disgraced soccer exec who is sent to North Carolina to turn around the struggling local soccer team, the Green Warriors.

However, the team she’s tasked to coach is made up of nine-year-old kids who wear tutus to practice and keep pet goats.

To make matters worse, she must team up with Cameron Caldani, a retired soccer star who is set on running Adalyn out of town after a series of unfortunate encounters. Despite the obstacles, Adalyn is determined to play the long game and redeem herself, with or without Cam’s help.

As a soccer fan, I was more than impressed!

As a sports enthusiast and avid reader, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on “The Long Game.” From the first page, I was drawn into the story of Adalyn Reyes, a disgraced soccer executive, and her journey to redemption on the soccer field.

Armas does an incredible job of creating characters that are both flawed and lovable. Adalyn’s determined and competitive nature allows her to succeed in the business of soccer, but it also makes her unapproachable and intimidating to those around her. Cameron Caldani’s talent as a goalkeeping prodigy is undeniable, but his sarcastic and guarded personality leaves him struggling to connect with others.

The unlikely pairing of Adalyn and Cam coaching a children’s soccer team in rural North Carolina makes for an entertaining and heartwarming story. Watching Adalyn learn to embrace the chaos of the Green Warriors was both amusing and endearing, to say the very least.

This story also brings authenticity to the sport of soccer, incorporating play-by-play action and authentic details that will satisfy even the most die-hard soccer fans.

But even those with no soccer knowledge will appreciate the book’s universal themes of redemption, forgiveness, and the importance of community.

Armas’s writing style is effortless and engaging, with the perfect balance of humor and heart. I found myself laughing out loud at the antics of the Green Warriors. But also tearing up at the emotional moments. And then out loud cheering on Adalyn and Cameron as they navigated their complicated pasts and present challenges.

Overall
