What if the Greek Myths were wrong?

Neon Gods by Katee Robert
Reading Time: < 1 minute

Greek mythology has left the purview of dreary Western literature survey classes and is now smoldering between the pages of romance novels. I’ve read The Iliad and The Odyssey countless times for school courses, and I can say with authority that romance novels are a lot more fun.

Neon Gods by Katee Robert is a barn burner of a tale that starts with Persephone being betrothed to Zeus by her mother, Demeter, in a ruthless attempt to consolidate power. Unwilling to be the wife of Zeus, a man who has killed all three of his previous wives, Persephone flees to the Underworld, where she meets Hades, and sparks begin to fly. It’s a wonderfully feminist twist to the original Hades and Persephone myth, in which Hades kidnaps Persephone and forces her to be his wife. In Neon Gods, Persephone upends her mother’s scheme and short-circuits Hades’ carefully constructed under-the-radar life.

Katee Robert is a consummate storyteller, and Neon Gods earns its designation as unputdownable. It’s chock full of adventure, intrigue, and, of course, romance. There is a lot of sex in this novel, and while I prefer my books to keep the sheet Salsa offstage, fifteen million copies of Fifty Shades of Grey sold suggests that I’m in the minority.

Neon Gods is the first in a trilogy, Book 2, Electric Idol released earlier this month, and Wicked Beauty hits shelves in June.
