Mrs. Nash’s Ashes by Sarah Adler – Book Review

What do you believe about true love?

When Millie promised her late, elderly best friend that she’d reunite her with a woman she fell in love with nearly 80 years ago, she didn’t expect to be traveling with three tablespoons of Mrs. Nash’s earthly remains in her backpack! On her way to Key West, Millie encounters travel problems. This forces her to accept a ride with Hollis Hollenbeck, an acquaintance who does not support her mission to deliver Mrs. Nash to her first love. Can this epic quest end well…for anyone?

The true power of happily ever after.

I am always automatically 100% IN for any well-told road trip story, and this unique tale is one of the best I’ve ever read! Although a romance at heart, Mrs. Nash’s Ashes deals with deep issues and does an exceptional job of showing readers that life must go on even as we are grieving the people we’ve lost or left behind. Millie’s sunny outlook contrasts beautifully with Hollis’ grumpy, pessimistic views, and I loved their interactions, especially as Millie begins to realize that he may enjoy her company a bit more than he wants to admit.

The LGBTQIA plotline between Mrs. Nash and the girl she left behind adds even more depth. There is some weirdness, the subplot about why Hollis is heading south is awkward and the cringe-worthy scenes caused by Millie’s lack of filters are a bit contrived, but overall, this is an excellent book for fans that love books that take place on the open road!

It is laugh-out-loud funny at times, filled with sweet moments, and raunchy enough to keep those pages turning.
