Holiday Romance – Two Books You Don’t Want to Miss This Season

Reading Time: 2 minutes

If December 25th arrives and you haven’t read a Christmas romance, is it too late? I contend that no, it is not.

There’s still time to save your holidays by reading either of these charming, holiday romances.

You’re a Mean One, Matthew Princeby Timothy Janovsky deserves to be read for the clever title alone. Matthew is a rich party boy who has embarrassed his fly-under-the-radar family by buying an island. I’ve never bought so much as a city block, let alone an entire island, but this story is so charming that I instantly forgave the patently ridiculous premise.

To keep the Island Gate story out of the press, Matthew’s parents pack him off to his Grandparents’ house in a small town, where he is to stay with no access to his phone or beloved black and gold credit cards. His grandparents have taken in a boarder, Hector, who has zero fashion sense and for whom a splash of cold water serves as both his hair and face care regimen. Oh, and he’s also smoking hot as this is a romance, after all.

As I read this, I couldn’t help but think of David Rose (played by Dan Levy) in Schitt’s Creek, one of the highest compliments I can give.

Kiss Her One for Me by Alison Cochrun hinges on a marriage-of-convenience trope, but it is so much more than that. Ellie Oliver is in desperate financial straits, so she agrees to marry Andrew so that he can get his inheritance. Her payout for this is $200,000.

Ellie does not expect that Andrew’s sister will turn out to be Jack, a woman she spent one perfect day with last Christmas and for whom she still pines. Unraveling the mess this fake engagement created is equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking.

Publishers Weekly captures the magic of Kiss Her Once for Me perfectly:

“A sparkling winter wonderland, quirky family traditions, and a messy ‘love trapezoid’ make the yuletide gay in this earnest queer rom-com…it’s delightful to watch the spin on the fake dating trope unfold. This is a winner.”
