‘Alone with You in the Ether’ by Olivie Blake

Reading Time: 4 minutes

This is not a story about endings.

Alone with You in the Ether by the New York Times bestselling author of The Atlas Six, Olivie Blake. This is a romance novel that explores how to fall in love even when we are broken.

Olivie Blake’s Alone with You in the Ether is a true, one-of-a-kind love story. This exploration of time, space, and the inevitability of love offers a unique look at how our personal mental health affects our search for love.

Aldo is a doctoral candidate who manages his destructive thoughts by performing compulsive mental calculations related to the possibility of time travel. He deals with the chaos of the world by relying on his routine. Without his rules and formulas to keep things on track, Aldo’s world would crumble around him.

Regan is a bipolar counterfeit artist who is undergoing court-ordered psychotherapy. She deals with the drudgery of human existence by dreaming of the multiverse, hoping that a different version of herself is actually making GOOD decisions in some alternate timeline.

Both Regan and Aldo have resigned themselves to the inevitability of isolation and loneliness. Neither of them considers themselves worthy of love due to their mental health challenges. But when the two of them meet by chance one day, a brand-new timeline is spawned. Could this be the multiverse timeline in which they find happiness with each other?

This exceptional romance book is for anyone who has ever felt too “different” to be loved. Blake reassures readers that everyone is worthy of love even with their imperfections.

Raves & Reviews for Alone with You in the Ether

“Alone With You in the Ether plays with narrative structure and linear time to weave a story of two broken people crashing together like comets, and we, as audience, are witness to their glorious destruction.” – Tor.com

“This is a book to savor.” — Publishers WeeklyThe pages fly by in this character-driven novel that is intimate, complicated, and utterly romantic.” – Booklist

“A wonder of a novel.” – B&N Reads

“An artist with bipolar disorder and an obsessive mathematician embark on an unconventional romance in this cerebral love story from Blake (The Atlas Six). When Art Institute of Chicago docent Charlotte Regan, who’s in court-ordered psychotherapy following a scheme to counterfeit foreign currency, meets Aldo Damiani, a prickly University of Chicago grad student, their connection is immediate. Aldo urges Regan to agree to six conversations, over the course of which he intends to understand her.
With the bemused tolerance of Regan’s boyfriend, the pair grow closer–so close that Regan offers Aldo “one part of me for your consumption.” She expects him to go for sex, but instead he asks for her art, which she hasn’t worked on in years. Spurred on, Regan takes up painting, dumps her boyfriend, quits her medication, and launches a volatile, passionate relationship with Aldo. Blake’s prose is silky and as eccentric as her characters, with an assortment of third-party narrators interrupting the action in “voice-over.” (“THE NARRATOR, A STUDENT WHO HAS JUST ARRIVED: You can never prepare for weathering anything in Chicago.”) The message of finding a richer life off mood stabilizers won’t sit well with all readers, but there’s no denying the characters make for fascinating and complicated studies. This is a book to savor.” – Publishers Weekly*

“Olivie Blake is a mind-blowing talent.” – Chloe Gong, New York Times bestselling author of These Violent Delights

“Compelling, entertaining, and addictive. The Atlas Six is academic Darwinism: survival of the smartest with a healthy dose of magic.” T. L. Huchu, author of The Library of The Dead

“This chilling story of ambition and magic will make you question your own morals as you grow to love (and hate) its fascinating, ruthless cast of characters. I utterly devoured this book.” – Amanda Foody, New York Times bestselling co-author of All of Us Villains

“The Atlas Six is dark academia with a magical twist that evokes the way graduate students are pitted against each other for limited positions (because even in the magical world there are still more people qualified to work in a library than there are library jobs).”
