‘A Winter in New York’ by Josie Silver Book Review

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A Winter in New York by Josie Silver is a love letter to New York, to all the women whose lives are cobbled together by grief and hope in equal measure, to family, love, and food.

I found myself reading into the wee hours of the night, feeling protective of Iris, the story’s narrator, desperate to know she would get her happy ending.

A young chef stumbles on a secret family recipe that might lead her to the love—and life—she’s been looking for in this stunning novel from the New York Times bestselling author of One Day in December.

The novel opens in a bookstore on Valentine’s Day, where Iris has gone to get the latest installment of her favorite series. She is beaten to the last copy by a man who is entirely unrepentant about sending her home empty-handed. When she notices a wedding ring on the book-snatcher’s finger, Iris becomes all the more incensed; he probably has romantic plans with his wife that night, whereas reading this book is the sum of her evening’s agenda. Walking desolately back to her apartment, she reflects:

I don’t actually want to stargaze in the back of a pickup truck or have dinner at the top of the Empire State Building tonight. And yes, I know my eighties rom-com references are dated, that there are a million cooler films I could cite instead. I won’t update my list, though, because memories of watching these movies. With my mother while we ate our homemade gelato from her vintage pink melamine bowls are the glue that holds my bones together.

The best novels leave an imprint on our hearts, and A Winter in New York. With its twists, heartbreak, and ultimate triumph, certainly left a lasting mark on mine.

What Other People Are Saying About A Winter in New York

VERDICT Iris and Gio’s relationship is full of sexy, heart-meltingly romantic moments in this emotional and charming rom-com. From Silver (One Day in December), which deserves its own movie. – Library Journal
A Winter in New York by Josie Silver is a charming and heartfelt romance. That can help you make that transition into fall and winter reading. I adored getting to know Iris and the Belotti family with the autumn to Christmas setting. In New York City in a novel that is also a love-letter to all my favorite rom-com films. –A Book Wanderer
