Anita Kelly found the Perfect Recipe for Love

Love & Other Disasters
Reading Time: 2 minutes

You know those books you read and immediately want to press into everyone’s hands and tell them to read it right nowLove & Other Disasters by Anita Kelly is one of those.

Dahlia Woodson is recently divorced, unemployed, and broke, but put a knife or a mixer in her hand, and she transforms into a superhero. Although she’s a self-taught chef, she’s good enough to land herself a spot on Chef’s Special

On the first day of filming, Dahlia is so overwhelmed that she forgets to look where she is going and crashes straight into London, a fellow contestant. Rattled, Dahlia proceeds to word vomit all over them about her fourth-grade spelling bee. Of course, it’s awkward for them both, as the best meet-cutes always are.

Because Love & Other Disasters is a romance, the only appropriate response London can have is to find Dahlia intriguing and adorable.

While you can see this love story coming from the first pages, it doesn’t matter. Dahlia and London are both adorable and intriguing, and you’ll be cheering for them with a lump in your throat throughout the entire book.

The lump is from the worry that Dahlia or London’s elimination from Chefs Special will happen before they know they’re meant to be together. It’s also from Dahlia’s rawness from her life before she arrived on set. And, it’s how the cast treats London when they come out as nonbinary or how their father reacts with anger and denial. It’s a whole-bag-of-potato-chips, eat-your-feelings read.

Although this is Anita Kelly’s first full-length novel, she has published several other novellas if you’re hungry for more of her irrepressible voice when you finish Love & Other Disasters.
