Danger & Thrills: Romance That Doesn’t Play It Safe

Romance Thrillers & Books with Romance and Action I Can’t Stop Recommending

Some readers want a slow burn. Others want sparks on page one. And plenty love cozy comfort reads. But this is for those who want their heart racing and their pulse up a notch. Dealer’s choice—always. And me? I gravitate toward romance thrillers that come loaded with danger, desire, and storylines that don’t slow down for anyone.

These are the books with romance and action that keep me hooked from the first chapter. The kind of reads where attraction complicates survival, secrets raise the stakes, and nobody gets to fall in love without consequences. This is a very personal list—recent favorites that delivered big feelings, sharp tension, and just enough chaos to make staying up way too late feel completely justified. There are some big hitters in the s lineup including books from Colleen Hoover, Nicholas Sparks / M Night Shyamalan and Ally Carter.

Woman Down – Colleen Hoover

Petra’s writing used to light streaming services on fire, but a big mistake on a new film adaptation has branded her as a fraud. The writing gigs dry up overnight, and she is floundering. She’s broke. She’s got her next book outlined, and even though her savings are nearly spent, she heads to a secluded cabin hoping to find inspiration for her new work.

The huge presence of Detective Nathaniel Saint gets the creative gears turning, and the fictional cop in Petra’s story begins to resemble Saint as he becomes her muse. Lines are blurred, and their “research” takes a very sexy turn. But when Saint starts inserting himself directly in her career and her writing, Petra has to confront the very problem that she created.

Her reputation is already destroyed, and severing her relationship with Saint will cost her more than her pride. Is there any way at all for Petra to rewrite her own future?

The Blonde Who Came in from the Cold – Ally Carter

I have been obsessed with Ally Carter since I opened Heist Society, a YA adventure that is a ton of fun. This title, the second in The Blonde Identity series, picks up about a year after the action in The Blonde Who Came in from the Cold wrapped up.

They don’t know where they are. They are bloody, bruised, and for some reason handcuffed together in the dark. And they have no idea what a nameless, faceless villain wants with them.

Two rival spies are forced to face both their present AND their past if they want to stay alive. There were sparks between them once, can they work together long enough to figure out the who, what, where, and why mess that they’ve woken up in.

This book is an absolute blast, but don’t take MY word for it! Check out this review from another little infinite contributor for the first book in the series.

The Princess and the P.I. – Nikki Payne

It WAS in fact the cover that drew me to this book! It feels both fresh and vintage and harkens back to those pulpy detective noir stories that were adapted into black-and-white movies.

Fiona Addai’s mission is clear: retrieve her late brother’s brilliant invention from the ruthless corporate hacks that stole both it and the credit. She has the skills – and the followers as Reddit’s famed detective, @Princess_PI! – to make it happen.  But things take a weird turn, and instead of getting the justice that her brother so richly deserved, Fiona lands herself in the lap of an open homicide investigation. As the main suspect.

Private investigator Maurice Bennett knows that Fiona is not a killer, and he’s curious about the person who wants others to see her that way. For the first time since a case went disastrously wrong, Maurice feels something click. He is intrigued.

Fiona is certainly not a damsel in distress. She needs his help, but she also wants a crash course in real-world detective operations. The two form an odd partnership and begin to unravel the strands of corporate greed, intellectual property, and a TON of secrets. To expose the real killer, Maurice and Fiona need to trust each other. And for both of them, that feels like the most dangerous thing of all.

Starlight and Cinnamon – Jem Spears

Daphne has a relatively demanding schedule thanks to her mysterious job, but she does manage to devote a lot of thought, time, and effort into figuring out who her next girlfriend will be. The current candidate is trying to convince Daphne to break into a laboratory to steal a monkey being used for medical research, so she is fine biding her time until she meets the right woman.

Cinnamon has devoted a lot of thought, time, and effort into convincing herself that she doesn’t WANT a girlfriend. She’s been single for seven years, and has been perfectly content with her loved ones, her hobbies, and her successful career, and Cinnamon sees no reason to change her vibe. But then, Daphne crashes into her life.

Now that they’ve found each other, the stories they’ve told themselves over the years fall by the wayside. And when their dangerous hobbies/projects intersect, they need to navigate the depth of their feelings as well in order to keep their lives intact. It might not be as easy as stealing a monkey from a lab, but they decide to give it a shot! Now what?!

Fish Out of Water – Katie Ruggle

Dahlia Weathersby’s sister disappeared while on what should have been an easy hike. Dahlia certainly isn’t an outdoorsy person, so she manages to rope the local hermit (who BTW is super, super hot) into a guide gig.

Winston knows that he SHOULDN’T take this city girl into the woods, but he can’t really let her go ALONE, can he? Dahlia needs to find her sister, but she won’t get far without a local to guide her into the mountains. Her survival skills are…subpar at best. And while their sharpening attraction is adding a sort-of sexy element to their time together, neither one can forget the real reason for their trek.

The wilderness definitely wildernesses and they encounter a lot of challenges as they climb higher and higher. Dahlia becomes more and more frantic as time passes, and she is desperate to find her sister. This city girl is on an adventure she won’t ever forget!

“Fish Out of Water reads like a sexy Sherlock Holmes, and is the most fun I’ve had in ages. The only hiking I want to do is up Winston Dane’s thighs.” ― Lana Ferguson, USA Today bestselling author

Remain – Nicholas Sparks with M. Night Shyamalan

Talk about a powerhouse author duo! Sparks is so good at romance, Shyamalan is so good at incredible twists…this was destined to be exceptional.

Architect Tate Donovan is struggling to accept the recent loss of his sister. He cannot forget her deathbed revelation, where Sylvia claimed to see spirits and calls it a “family gift”, and it has caused him some problems. After a discharge from a fancy facility where he gets treatment for depression, he heads to Cape Cod to design a summer home for his best friend.

Tate checks into the local bed and breakfast and immediately encounters a young woman named Wren. The two form an incredible connection immediately, but Tate quickly realizes that Wren has a lot of issues. He needs to explore Wren’s past in order to guarantee a future for either of them. Can their blooming love transcend the physical limitations of our world?

P.S. Major motion picture coming soon!
